Pulled Porkey~ Dark meat turkey makes a great substitute for pork in this easy to make slow cooker recipe.
As much as I wish I could, I can't take credit for this unique name, but Tyler can! One night we were enjoying our BBQ Turkey sandwiches as I would call them and he said, "hmm this tastes like pulled pork". Then he said, "it's like pulled pork turkey...pulled porkey!" Ohhh that kid!
When it comes to a roasted turkey, we are a family of only white meat eaters. I'm not sure what it is, but we really only like the white meat. I had to get creative when thinking of what to do with all the juicy dark meat that would be left over. That is where pulled porkey was created. Pretty much the only way we will eat it now is with BBQ sauce. It truly tastes like pulled pork and is every bit as satisfying. Also, what's not to love about a delicious crock pot meal that warms your home with mouth watering aromas when you walk through the door.
Add onions, barbecue sauce, and spices to your slow cooker.
Come back in a few hours to an amazing pulled porkey!
Prep 5 mins ∙ Cook from 3-7 hours
about 3 - 4 cups dark turkey meat (fresh or frozen)
1½ cups BBQ Sauce (I used Sweet Baby Rays Honey BBQ)
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
2 cloves of garlic minced
1 Tbsp olive oil
1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 Tbsp maple syrup
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
salt and pepper to taste
Drizzle half the olive oil and sprinkle in half the onions inside bottom of a 5-6 qt crock pot.
Add in the turkey meat and drizzle with remaining olive oil and remainder of the onions.
Add seasoning and BBQ sauce on top of meat.
Cover and cook on high 3 to 4 hours or on low for 6-7 hours. About 1 hour before serving, shred the meat in the crock pot using two forks. Stir it up with all the sauce to let cook a bit longer.
Serve on toasted buns of choice topped with a slaw. My kids like it topped with melted cheddar cheese.
